When asked what he thought of the Sun purchase by Oracle – “I need to think about it,” Ballmer told reporters in Moscow, “I am very surprised.”
I’m hearing that Ballmer wasn’t the only one surprised by Monday’s deal. According to a source of mine, IBM hadn’t given up on purchasing Sun and was blindsided by Oracle‘s move.
“Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) and Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. Sun Chairman Scott McNealy and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison have been close friends for 20 years.
