here they come - the Democrats

To put “huge” crowds in the proper perspective means an overflow crowd that forced moving 6 precincts out of the Bishop Elementary School gymnasium (located at 3100 Elati @ Dartmouth in Englewood), into 6 classrooms to accommodate the vast number of caucus goers

This is truly amazing of the everyday people desiring to take Democracy back.

Bill McCahill, Arapahoe Democrats Secretary and site coordinator for the Bishop Elementary School caucus location stated We expected a pretty large turnout tonight, but I was pleasantly surprised at the crowd estimated at 10 times the 2006 Bill Ritter Caucus turnout of 45 at this same location. McCahill was on target with his crowd estimate as the official count at this location was 451 to be exact.

No current government math was injected to skew the numbers. No inflatable figurines or cardboard cut-outs were needed or desired.

taking a straw poll first

I seized the opportunity to observe and take pictures and chat with many of my neighbors as an unaffiliated voter not able to participate in the Democratic Party Caucus.

stating a passionate belief

I also wanted to be able to see first hand as well as truly feel the emotion of the people attending this history making event.

I also was more than a little surprised and overwhelmed like most who attended - on the crowd size.

I was amazed as I roamed the building at the civility and the many intelligent and passionate pitches to fellow precinct members broken up into manageable groups throughout the building.

Look again at the pictures and imagine that the original intent was to accommodate the entire caucus within the gymnasium, but the enthusiastic swarm of Democrats overwhelmed the building.

caucus delegates and alternates chosen

This shot is of a precinct’s elected delegates and alternates to the National Convention. Most precincts had wrapped up their caucus before 8:45 and statistics were being called in to party headquarters. Some resolutions kept some precincts past 9:00. A very focused, but rewarding evening for all.
