Poor judgement was exercised by Mark Penn, CEO of Burson-Marstellar Worldwide, a PR and lobbying firm, who was the Chief Strategist for the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign when he met with the newly contracted Government of Columbia’s Ambassador representing Burson-Marstellar over lobbying for a Columbian Free Trade Agreement with the United States - in which Hillary Clinton adamantly opposes.

Last Friday, Penn apologized for his meeting with the Colombian ambassador after the Wall Street Journal broke the story, and issued the following statement: ‘The meeting was an error in judgment that will not be repeated, and I am sorry for it.’

The Columbian government on Saturday morning issed the following statement: “The Colombian government considers this a lack of respect to Colombians, and finds this response unacceptable.” The statement confirmed that the country is canceling its contract with Burson-Marsteller, but will continue to seek passage of the Colombian trade deal. On Sunday after mounting pressure and discussion on many media outlets including Meet The Press, campaign manager, Maggie Williams, issued a statement announcing the change.”After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign,” Williams wrote. “Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign’s strategic message team going forward.”

Penn never really got in sync with the Hillary campaign, maintaining his old office back in Burson-Marstellar over Hillary’s campaign headquarters, even though he has worked for both the Clintons off and on since 1996.

Critics complained that Penn was too data-driven and obstinate, blaming him for the failure to “humanize” Clinton in the early days of the race.

Mark Penn also worked for Al Gore’s Presidential bid, but was fired there also.
