Many have said for years -as goes Alaska goes the nation in Presidential elections. Ted Stevens Senate seat was already in serious play by former Democrat Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, who has raised more funds, leading in the latest polls by 9% points and who is extremely popular in Alaskan politics with one-in-5 Alaskan Republican’s support.

Begich, the Democratic challenger, said in a statement: “The indictment of Senator Ted Stevens is a sad day for Alaska and for the senator after his 40 years of service to our state. . . . I have great faith in our state and our people, and we will continue to move forward.

Barack Obama has made Alaska a battle ground state with staffers operating a field office there - the first Democrats Presidential campaign field office since Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Obama is locked into a statistical tie in Alaska in the latest poll with McCain up only by 1% point.

Senator Ted Stevens, is the longest-serving Republican U.S. Senator and famous for his almost incoherent and absurd discussion of the Internet functions (Internet series of tubes), as previous Chairman of the powerful United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in opposition to Net Neutrality legislation which he was blocking on his committee. Republican Senator Stevens, the first sitting U.S. senator to face federal indictment since 1993 has certainly been a significant figure in Alaska politics since before statehood - as he has been indicted on seven counts of falsely reporting hundreds of thousands of dollars in services he received from a International Oil Services company (Veco Corporation), who helped renovate his home at No cost for favorable legislation as trade. Numerous Alaskan Republican legislators have already gone to prison in relation to these corruption charges.

Alaska senator on charges: ‘I am innocent’.
“Stevens knew the requirements of the financial disclosure forms and knowingly and intentionally sought to conceal and cover up his receipt of things of value by filing financial disclosure forms that contained false statements and omissions concerning Stevens’ receipt of these things of value,” the indictment said.
