Saving Money on a Road Trip with Kids

Our life is fraught with road trips.

Roughly once a month, we make a four hour road trip (one way) to visit either my parents or my wife’s parents for the weekend. We usually make a several hour road trip (one way) or two each year to visit the Chicagoland area, where we have a lot of friends and family.

This experience has taught us two things: even simple road trips can be fraught with many unexpected little expenses that really add up, and children make the problem substantially worse as they often cause extra stops on their own.

Making Healthy, Simple, & Cheap Meals

Many evenings going out means staying in, and the focus around our house is getting a tasty and healthy (and inexpensive) meal on the table quickly. We have a three year old and a one year old at our house, so our goal is to establish a fixed meal time, put something on the table that will meet all their nutritional needs and still be pleasing to their (and our) palate, do it quickly, and do it inexpensively. This gives us plenty of family time in the evenings and keeps money in our pockets for a rainy day.
